Speech-language therapy by telepractice (also known as virtual therapy, teletherapy, or telerehabilitation), can be conducted in different ways, often in combination: over the phone, email, or by videoconference -- all from the comfort of your own home. These treatment modalities are particularly well suited to speech and language rehabilitation activities for adults, and have been effectively used for therapeutic purposes, even before the pandemic.
Recent clinical studies on language and cognitive-communication telepractice for adults with brain injury have found it to be effective, with generally equivalent results to in-person therapy (see references 1-9 below). Anecdotal reports from clinicians and clients further suggest that teletherapy may have certain advantages for individuals with brain injury, such as reduced travel costs, decreased fatigue, improved focus, and better attendance, as well as easier access to communication partners and natural environments. Teletherapy also provides access to speech and language rehabilitation services for adults with brain injury in underserved areas.
Telepractice may not be appropriate for everyone. Some types of communication impairments and ability profiles may benefit more from teletherapy than others. We explore this with each client during the intake process, in function of their needs and goals. If you or a loved one are considering teletherapy, we would be happy to discuss any questions or concerns with you prior to booking an appointment.
We use high quality telepractice equipment and services, including Zoom Pro Healthcare, to protect client confidentiality and to provide clients with the best possible therapy experience.
